Snapdragon 670 performance will split the difference between the 660 and the 845

The Geekbench 4 has some results which claim to be from Snapdragon 670 chipset – the exciting new chip that uses the same Kryo cores as the flagship Snapdragon 845. There’s no official word from Qualcomm yet so details like the 10nm process are yet to be confirmed.

The performance is on the level we’d expect – right between the Snapdragon 660 chip it is meant to replace and the 845 top dog. Of course this shows only the speed of the processor, which is clocked down slightly, and tells us nothing on the GPU. Also note that there are no phones with either of these chipsets so the tests were likely run on development boards.

We’re yet to see how the GPU will perform, it was the major difference between the Snapdragon 835 and 660 and we expect the same will be true for this generation as well. According to an earlier leak it will use Adreno 620.

Motorola Moto G4 Play finally gets Nougat update

Motorola launched a trio of G4-branded phones last year, including the G4, G4 Plus, and G4 Play. While the first two got Nougat last year, the G4 Play wasn’t lucky enough.

Initially, the company said the update will arrive in June, but it’s only now starting its rollout.

The update brings along Android Nougat version 7.1.1 and also bumps the Android security level to November. There’s no information on the reason behind such a huge delay, but it’s good to see the update arriving nonetheless.

Google launches Android Oreo Go OS for budget smartphones

Google launched a basic version of its operating system for budget smartphones in India on Tuesday.

Named Android Oreo Go, the Android-based operating system will have a size as small as 512 megabytes. It hopes to engage the millions of entry-level smartphone users in the rapidly-growing wireless market with a smoother experience on less powerful phones.

Oreo Go smartphone users will also get a special version of the Google Play application store, said Google.

The operating system will ensure an average 15 percent faster app startup time, and active Data Saver features that will be one by default. The company expects users to have 50 percent more storage on their phones and save 1,000 more pictures on an average.

Google apps such as YouTube, Assistant, Chrome, Gmail, Maps, Search and Gboard have been re-worked to optimally run on entry-level devices, and the Go versions will be pre-loaded on all Oreo Go devices.

“Android Oreo (Go edition) will help improve the experience on entry-level phones while new apps like Files Go will ensure their experience is smooth and they consume less data,” Caesar Sengupta, Vice-President, Next Billion Users, told PTI.

He also expects the Android Oreo Go edition to be available to users in early 2018. The code of Oreo Go is already available through Android 8.1.

According to Reuters, only a third of the 1.2 billion wireless service users have smartphones, which makes it a large potential market for smartphone producers and telecom firms.

In a bid to compete for India’s user attention with Facebook and Whatsapp, Google has made efforts to widen its presence in the Indian market in the recent years by providing free Wifi services at railway stations, as well as launching a new payments app.

This follows inputs that foreign intelligence agencies, especially those in Beijing and Islamabad, are using such apps to gain unauthorized access and steal data from smartphones.

The order goes on to read, “Therefore it is requested that all officers and men under your command may be advised to not use these apps in office or on personal mobile phones. If some of them are already using any of these apps then they should be asked to immediately uninstall the app and format their cellphones for strict compliance. You are requested to issue comprehensive guidelines on this matter.”

The report has been published with inputs from agencies like the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO). All army personnel have been told to immediately uninstall the 42 apps as well as format their smartphones for additional measure.

Indian Government asks Armed Forces personnel to uninstall 42 apps for fear of ‘Chinese Spyware’. The rise of Chinese smartphone companies means that if those in the armed forces are using phones by any of these companies some of these apps might be pre-installed in the device.

However, Truecaller, Chetah mobile apps like Clean Master etc are not malicious & not Chinese. But certainly Mi apps and the very MiUI(Launcher) itself is a backdoor which posts data to some Chinese servers are a concern. There has been lot of such cases reported by Security Researchers worldwide.

My humble suggestion to users is there is a very rare tool which can be used to know information about this and almost anything. Seek information before installing any of these  Chinese Spyware Apps and check for the Play Protect which is newly introduced in Play store.
